By far, one of the best ways to help your earn extra income to help work toward your FIRE goal is to generate a passive income. The term passive income has been thrown around quite lightly recently although a lot of the time these methods do not tend to be truly passive. In my opinion, you should only call something a passive income if you do/make something once and it continues to generate income on its own (or at least very little constant attention).

Signup Referrals

Making a passive income sounds very attractive however getting started can be quite difficult. One of the easiest ways to go about it is using referral programs. The three that I recommend trying are all trading-based sign-up referrals. While it requires very little work to be done, the difficult part is finding people to use your referral codes, the only guaranteed way for this type of income to work is to have built up a fan base or following. Doing things like blogging and YouTube is a great way to generate traffic to your referral links because you can build an audience that knows, likes, and trust you. But don't let that put you off, you could just share this with friends, family and colleagues and still make a fair amount too.

Without further ado and my apologies in advance for this does look like I am just trying to ram some referral codes down your throat, I mean I am, but I'm also trying to teach you how to do it too!

3.Coinbase ($10 Bitcoin)

This one isn't as lucrative but still worth it if you have friends or family that are into cryptocurrency.

  • Sign up to coinbase here (sorry this is just getting a bit embarrassing).
  • Buy/sell $100 of cryptocurrency (doesn't have to be bitcoin).
  • That's it, enjoy your free $10 of Bitcoin (likely to be worth trillions in the future I'm sure haha).

That's the referral side of things out the way, there are of course some even better ways to make a passive income online which I much prefer because it is a lot less 'shove down your throat' than the referral schemes are.

Affiliate Marketing

The best and easiest way by far is amazon affiliates (or similar). To explain it in its simplest terms, you link to a product on amazon using your personalized affiliate URL, then if a customer uses that link to purchase an item you will earn a percentage-based commission (between 1% and 12%). For example, on my Books page, I link to a few popular finance books on amazon, I have linked to these using my affiliate link and if someone was to buy one of these books I would then make a small commission. This requires quite a high volume on lower valued products for it to generate any amount worth shouting about, but if you have a blog with a niche for expensive products then just one sale could be quite significant. To add to that, the customer does not necessarily have to buy the item that you have linked to. The 'Cookie' lasts for 24 hours, so as long as they order or add something to their basket within this time frame you will still qualify for the commission.

Amazon Associates Logo

In addition to the amazon affiliate program, amazon also runs a bounty program where instead of promoting a product, you receive a fixed commission from getting people to sign up to Services such as "Amazon Prime - 30 day free trial". This is done using the same methodology as the affiliates link.

some of the bounties you can get are:

The beauty of the bounty program is that patrons only have to sign up for the free trial for you to make your commission, even if they cancel after the trial you are still eligible for the payment.

1. Amazon affiliate

  • Sign up for the amazon affiliate program here
  • Link to relevant products on your website, blog, youtube channel, etc.
  • Earn your commission on qualifying product purchases made through your link.

2. Amazon Bounty Programme

  • Link to one of your desired bounty programs on your website, blog, youtube channel, etc.
  • Earn your commission on qualifying sign-ups made through your link.

Skillshare (Refer a friend, Affiliate & Courseware)

The beauty of Skillshare is that it is genuinely a useful platform and so it does not feel disingenuous when you refer people to sign-up for its services. If you meet Skillshares' eligibility criteria you can register as an 'affiliate', this then gives you the ability to earn $7 (£5) in commission for each new customer that signs up for a Premium Membership or free trial through your link (You also get free access to SkillShare which is normally a $13 subscription).

If you don't qualify for the affiliate program you can still sign up for Skillshare and receive a free months premium membership for every person you refer! Unfortunately, no money to be made this way but it's a good bridge gap while you work on building your audience base.

Finally, you can make money by selling a course on Skillshare. Do you have a skill that you think you could teach others? (if not I'm sure you could learn enough of something to be able to create one or two courses at least). All you need to do is create a class, normally between 20-60 minutes long on your chosen topic. You can then earn referrals from students that you get to sign up for as well as earn royalties for every minute of your course that are watched. You get $10 (£7) for every student you bring to Skillshare that signs up for a Premium Membership. Teachers are paid from the royalty pool based on their share of the minutes watched by Premium students (both paying members and those in free trials) across the platform each month. For example, if a teacher's classes receive 5% of the minutes-watched by Premium members, that teacher receives 5% of the royalty pool. On average, first-time teachers earn $200 (£142) in their first month on Skillshare, with top teachers earning upwards of $3,000 (£2140)!
